JOB SUMMARY

The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as caregiver who provides patient-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the patient per plan of care. Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, meal preparation, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned patient. May assist the patient in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and provides range of motion and passive exercises. Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining. May assist patients with meals and snacks; provides water and supplements as appropriate. May aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures. Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations. Documents the outcomes related to patient care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the Registered Nurse. Collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping and laundry services to assist patients with keeping areas clean and operational.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for promoting a safe environment for patients, families, staff, residents, and visitors and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary heath care team to provide the best outcome for patients.;Performs routine cleaning and disinfecting tasks in certain areas of a healthcare organization.;Operates and maintains medical equipment based on specific policies.;Monitors patient progress and identifies issues and concerns regarding progress.;Maintains a high standard in relation to infection control mechanisms for patient safety.;Evaluates patient’s progress and communicates with multidisciplinary team members;Documents the critical elements within a patient chart to help others.;Assists with daily living of numerous patients with a wide variety of health conditions.;Administer medications prescribed by providers.;Adheres to legal regulations and organizational policies when discussing patient health information;

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

Must be willing to work with hospice patients and families (end of life). Requirements are medication administration, daily cares and ADL's of patients in a 4 bed cottage. Other requirements are cleaning, cooking, laundry in the cottage along with patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) required.
Minimum age of 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience preferred.
Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually. Maintains all department specific required certifications. North Dakota and Iowa: Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing. CNA certification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing. When applicable, may need a valid Driver's License and auto insurance. Successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant once CNA certification is obtained. Minnesota: Must have nursing assistant certification, have completed the 75-hour course and be registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Successful completion of a state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course. South Dakota: Must successfully complete the state approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course. CMA certification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
