JOB SUMMARY

Receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. Performs complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Responsible to review slide quality. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Will work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Will be responsible for performing routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. May be required to interact with all ages of client population. Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Keep abreast of new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains a safe working environment, including proper handling of materials and equipment. Completes staining processes, including making and air drying smears and fixing and staining cells. Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and maintain laboratory equipment. Promotes organizational learning through knowledge management, training and development, and sharing key experiences. Presents a professional image, especially when dealing with customers. Participates in the preparation of simple clinical specimens according to different requests. Operates and calibrates equipment in a basic laboratory environment. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

This position is a full time position of 80 hours per 2 week pay period working four 8 hour shifts, Monday through Friday, rotating between the hours of 4:00 am and 12:30 pm, NO holidays. May be required to work an evening shift on occasion if the workload demands it, along with occasional Saturdays.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree required.
Possess a national certification as a Histology Technician from an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
