Job Information

This position is for a design engineer with a strong analytical focus, for the mechanical design of rotary screw air compressors and systems. The engineer will work with senior compressor design staff to codify and organize design tools created for air compressor design. The position requires a candidate who can be productive in a self-directed and experimental environment, for discovery and documentation of the important factors and underlying science governing rotary screw compressor performance. Responsibilities will include the technical design and analytical aspects of sub-system components to ensure design integrity and robustness. This individual is expected to collaborate in a dynamic engineering team designing and supporting new product development and new technology initiatives.

Role & Responsibility

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and analyze components of rotary screw air compressors, considering distributed pressure forces, material deflection, intake and discharge porting, and thermal effects of air compression
  • Apply engineering and mathematical principles to the solution of physical problems, analysis of test data, and prediction of performance
  • Use commercial analysis tools and develop mathematical models for design and analysis
  • Influence engineering decision-making by providing reliable structural, fluid or other analysis insights
  • Evaluate oil flow rates through compressor cooling oil distribution network
  • Execute product verification plan by implementing current FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or other simulation best practices
  • Help implement CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques for improved compressor performance
  • Direct and analyze results of dynamometer and product tests on prototype and production machines
  • Work with designers to produce accurate and complete engineering designs, drawings and documentation
  • Assist Engineering Manager in all activities to achieve the departmental and organizational goals

Job Requirement

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Additional background in mathematics or data analysis is preferred

Key Skillsets:
  • Evidence of an understanding of thermodynamic and mechanical principles (e.g. compression cycles, heat transfer, power transmission, stress and strain, material properties)
  • Ability to model problems, algorithms and reporting for analytic learning and data optimization
  • Willingness to learn new skills for bearing system design, gear design, lubrication system design, and other aspects of compressor design
  • Experience with commercial software for analyzing and solving physical problems involving air compression is a plus
  • Precision machining and dimensional coordinate measurement system knowledge is a plus
  • Plant or manufacturing operation experience is a plus
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the business using Office 365 tools
  • Familiarity with Product Lifecycle and Computer Aided Design systems, (e.g. Windchill and Creo)
