JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for providing leadership of the day-to-day operations of the laboratory or laboratory department. Acts as a point of contact to technical staff and responds to questions and provides direction. May collect and process lab specimens and may perform clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures May collect and manage samples of blood and other fluids from patients as needed. Serves as a liaison between technical staff and laboratory leadership, as well as communicating issues and concerns to appropriate personnel. Participate in the hiring, training performance management, and disciplinary action of staff. May assist in the collection and preparation of required budget information. Maintains a positive work environment for the laboratory staff and develop a team approach to optimize work flow, improve customer satisfaction and reduce errors. Responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Follows standard operating procedures and ensures laboratory safety, quality, and regulatory requirements are met. Collaborates with other departments across the enterprise. Demonstrates critical and independent judgement with decision-making and problem-solving.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Requires MLT or MLS certification or board eligible. Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Adheres to relevant policies and ethics for clinical laboratory testing. Collects medical specimens with strict adherence to established procedures and test requisitions. Develops a culture in which all members work constructively to improve the performance of individuals and the team. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary. Monitors the integrity of medical specimens according to testing purposes and requirements. Presents a professional image, especially when dealing with customers. Promotes organizational learning through knowledge management, training and development, and sharing key experiences. Seeks opportunities to help others learn as teacher, coach, and mentor. Works with quality assurance methods, tools and techniques.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

This is a full time position of 80 hours per tow week pay period working primarily day shift with various shift times. This position would rotate between all three campuses, which include: Sanford Medical Center Fargo, Sanford Medical Center Broadway and Sanford Medical Center South University.

QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a national laboratory certification or laboratory specialty certification, for example: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Histology Technician (HT), etc. through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); or be registry eligible and obtain certification within 12 months of hire into position. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed or have a provisional license, by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications. ND license regulations are not applicable for cytology or histology laboratories. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Associates degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Two years of laboratory related experience required.
