Medical Technician

Responsibilities

• Receiving outpatients reporting to the laboratory specimen collection area and answering questions related to the laboratory visit;
• Receiving and processing requests for laboratory testing and verifying completeness and accuracy;
• Collecting blood, urine, or other specimens for a variety of tests;
• Verifying patient identity and preparing patients for specimen collection;
• Using special drawing techniques, using the appropriate collection containers, and obtaining appropriate specimen volumes;
• Performing point-of-care (POC) international normalized ratio (INR) testing on patients and the required quality control testing associated with this assay;
• Drawing pre-transfusion samples, cross matches, and timed specimens;
• Adhering to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times;
• Assisting with the training of laboratory and medical center personal in phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen requirements;
• Responding to and reporting emergency situations;
• Observing and reporting physical or mental changes while patients are being drawn;
• Performing related duties as required.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test results is received.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, One position from 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM and One position from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM - Both positions have rotating weekends and holidays.
