JOB SUMMARY

The Assignment Editor for Sanford Health News is a member of Sanford's newsroom staff and is responsible for coordinating, scheduling, writing and editing stories that will appear on Sanford Health News and reports to the News Manager. Works across various teams to capture story ideas and pitches for the News Manager to review. Upon approval, the assignment editor will move approved work to the newsroom editorial planning calendar and assign stories to contributing writers and reporters. The Assignment Editor maintains the overall editorial planning calendar and tracks story assignments to ensure deadlines are met. In addition to generating story ideas, coordinating and assigning stories, the Assignment Editor will write, edit and publish stories. Works closely with social media, media relations and internal communications teams to ensure all of Sanford Health's communication and news platforms are updated, current and accurate. Works closely with the News Anchor and Host of Sanford Health News to ensure appropriate resources and content are available for website updates, podcasts and weekly broadcasts. The Assignment Editor provides writers and reporters with guidance and direction on priorities, collaborates on direction of stories, headlines, etc. and has the authority to make decisions on content. Meets with the News Manager, writers, reporters, photographers, videographers and other stakeholders to identify story ideas. Distributes and assigns Sanford Health News stories to writers and reporters. Tracks execution to ensure deadlines are met. Organizes and prioritizes Sanford Health News stories to present in a logical, compelling order. Maintains the Sanford Health News editorial calendar. Assists teams in coming up with story ideas and gathering information. Schedules interviews with Sanford Health physicians, leaders, employees and patients. Is part of the newsroom staff and contributes content on a regular basis, writing and editing assigned stories. Coordinates the coverage of multiple stories at once, monitoring the progress of news team activities. Collaborates with digital and creative teams, social media teams and internal communication teams to ensure timely distribution of content. Makes recommendations to staff on story ideas, headlines, delivery and scheduling. Makes decisions on newsroom content and delivery Conducts interviews by phone or in-person as needed. Complies with other job related responsibilities as assigned.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Responds to day-to-day operational priorities while still making progress on project work. Processes large quantities of detailed information with high levels of accuracy. Identifies deliverables, resources and dependencies in project plans. Documents project meetings, particularly status reports on deliverables and next steps. Demonstrates experience participating in productive collaborative processes. Communicates regularly with news teams, editors, photographers, etc. Analyzes own assignments and work environment for creative changes. Adheres to company documentation and quality standards that are related to technical writing. Delivers written and oral communication, responds to questions and concerns, and produce specific outcomes and impact. Works with a variety of multimedia development tools.

QUALIFICATIONS

A four-year degree in journalism, or related field required.
Proven work experience with a minimum of three years full-time experience in professional newsroom experience with increased levels of responsibilities. Able to assess newsworthiness of information. Able to write, report and edit high-quality content. Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Able to work under stressful conditions and deadlines. Previous health care experience preferred.
