Hiring DepartmentRAIN Program, Nursing Department, College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  Salary $50,000/Annual, full time (40 hours/week), benefited, exempt.  This position is funded with a grant which is currently funded for one year.
Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave.  Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans. 
Work Schedule:   Monday-Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm    Occasional evening/weekend hours required. Travel including possible weekend travel is required. This position is located in Grand Forks, ND

The mission of the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines (CNPD) is to prepare future leaders, to advance human well-being and improve quality of life for diverse populations, with an emphasis on rural communities in North Dakota, the region and beyond, through the provision of high-quality innovative inter-professional education, research and service. The CNPD is comprised of three departments: Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Social Work.
The RAIN Program (Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing) is a program within the UND College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines. The RAIN/MHA Education Pathways project is an empowerment model for MHA members who are pursuing a higher education or vocational training. The RAIN/MHA Mentor position primary responsibilities are: 

  • Identify and recruit students for the MHA Education Pathways Project.
  • Recruit students through advertisements, personal interviews, radio and other media, contact with tribal entities including Tribal Community Colleges and high schools. 
  • Assist in development of recruitment plans and materials.
  • Track prospective students: telephone, e-mail, personal communication
  • Develop and foster Mentor relationship with MHA students at respective locations; provide academic advisement; assess barriers to success; develop strategies to alleviate barriers; referrals as needed; monitor student progress.
  • Develop a trusting, caring relationship with MHA students at respective locations. Complete MHA Enrollment forms, including Student Agreement, maintain Student documentation and files.
  • Maintain ongoing student contact and interaction.
  • Develop an Educational Care Plan with student;
  • Provide academic and personal advise/counsel; assist with financial aid applications.
  • Assist students in completing forms for admissions; financial assistance including FAFSA; housing assistance, etc.
  • Guide and encourage students to achieve academic success and employment in chosen field; work with Project partners to achieve goals of MHA Education Pathways project
  • Develop self-esteem building and empowerment strategies for students,
  • Participate in professional development seminars and Team Building sessions
  • Build and maintain student support network with high schools, tribal colleges, state institutions and vocational education institutions across the state
  • Provide monitoring, tracking and reporting of Mentor Activities
  • Record all support services provided within student files on s: drive; and responsible for written quarterly reports.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings (in person or electronically), submit monthly staff reports. Attend monthly meetings with all MHA Team Education Partners.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Science, Counseling or related fields
  • Minimum of one year specific experience recruiting American Indian Students and
  • One year of specific work experience providing retention services for American Indian students
  • Experience with educational and vocational institutions; demonstrated experience working with higher education required
  • Minimum of one year work experience working with the American Indian populations; American Indian culture, sociological and psychosocial behaviors
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling or related field
  • Extensive experience (five or more years) working with the American Indian populations
  • Prior experience working on grant funded projects
  • Experience in development of Education Plans
