JOB SUMMARY

The News Director leads and manages the planning, production and presentation of Sanford Health News, as well as supervises the news department staff. Works in cooperation with corporate and marketing leaders to leverage Sanford Health News to support Sanford Health's mission by creating compelling stories that build brand loyalty internally and externally.
The News Director is responsible for planning, developing and successfully implementing Sanford's newsroom strategy including the oversight of the website and broadcast news over a variety of channels. Acts as the primary liaison to advance the newsrooms programming to advance Sanford Health's national profile by developing corporate news and health news stories that focus on health education, employee profiles, research and innovation, business development and lifestyle that will be published on Sanford Health News website. The News Director participates in strategic and cross-functional meetings, collaborating with marketing creative and digital teams, media relations teams, internal communication teams and social media teams to develop strategies to expand overall reach. The News Director plans, schedules, reviews and approves all story content.
Directs the activities of the newsroom staff to develop story ideas, track issues and events, schedule writers/reporters for coverage and schedule stories for publication. Leads, coaches and develops the newsroom staff. Collaborates with leaders and stakeholders across the organization to develop strategies and story ideas. Serves as the primary editor to ensure stories are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner. Serves as the primary liaison to various internal and external constituencies to advance the newsroom's programming.
Sets goals, manages budgets and monitors overall performance of the site both externally and internally, making recommendations for improvements. Seeks opportunities to promote public outreach, build community engagement and relationships. In partnership with marketing teams, develops efficient internal workflow systems and processes. Develops and manages the editorial calendar, adheres to deadlines and makes timely and effective decisions requiring prompt attention. Conducts periodic business reviews with key stakeholders to ensure business objectives are being met. Accountable for overall content development and final approval of all newsroom content. Defines equipment, software, staffing and travel needs for the team, making recommendations where appropriate. Complies with other job related responsibilities as assigned.

Demonstrates an ability to thrive in an unstructured, ambiguous environment. Creates a climate that cultivates imagination, new ideas, and experimentation. Advocates persistent contact and network building activities by news team members. Adjusts departmental priorities and resource allocations to support changing needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

A four-year degree in journalism, or related field required, Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of six years full-time experience in professional journalism, preferably in multi-platform news environment. Must have experience in broadcast production, web content, news writing and news editing. Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills. Health care experience preferred.
