Summary

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agricultures chief scientific research agency and one of the worlds premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

This position is a Research Plant Geneticist (Research Associate) assigned to the Sunflower Genetics Program, located within the USDA-ARS Sunflower and Plant Biology Research Unit, Red River Valley Agricultural Research Center in Fargo, ND.  The research of the Sunflower Genetics Program is a component of ARS National Program 301, Plant Genetic Resources, Genomics and Genetic Improvement. 

Responsibilities

The incumbent will conduct research on map-based cloning of a gene derived from a sunflower line HA 458 for resistance to downy mildew.  Developing molecular markers, sequencing the target region for identifying the gene candidate, screening an ethyl methanesulfonate-induced mutant population of HA 458, identifying downy mildew-susceptible mutants to determine the functional gene, analyzing data, and publishing research results will be required. The incumbent will also develop functional DNA markers for marker-assisted selection of the gene in sunflower breeding.
