SE MN locations – MnDOT District 6

MnDOT may fill up to 15 Transportation Generalist vacancies at various truck stations within the district.

LOCATIONS INCLUDE
Albert Lea, Austin, Caledonia, Cannon Falls, Dodge Center, Dresbach, Faribault, La Crescent, Northfield, Owatonna, Preston, Red Wing, Rochester, Rushford, St Charles, Stewartville, Wabasha, Winona, and Zumbrota.  

HOURS OF WORK

  • Summer are typically Monday - Thursday, 6:30 am - 4:00 pm; Friday, 6:30 am - 10:30 am. 
  • Winter are typically Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; or a snow and ice shift, 12:00 am - 12:00 pm(A shift) or 12:00 pm - 12:00 am (B shift).  During snow & ice operations employees are split into an A & B shift and will receive 8-hours of work or more depending on the length of the event. 

Hours may include various shifts or overtime for winter road patrol assignments or emergency situations that may include working nights, weekends and holidays.  Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to work within one-hour of being called.

SOME EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE LISTED BELOW, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING
Function: Road Surface/Roadway Maintenance

  • Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
  • Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
  • Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
  • Provide traffic control
  • Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities

Function: Snow and Ice

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
  • Perform all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes
  • Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
  • Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Exam Part 1: NOTE: Please ensure that your resume clearly addresses the required experiences/skills listed below in order to continue in the hiring process.

  • One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience)

AND

  • Valid Commercial Drivers' License, Class B with no air brake restriction.  A Class A CDL with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement will be required within the first six months of employment.

'YOU MUST LIST COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE WITH NO AIR BRAKE RESTRICTION AND ANY AND ALL ENDORSEMENTS/CERTIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2: Receipt of a passing score of Level 3 or higher on the math portion of the computerized test and Level 4 or higher on the computerized reading test. [The job offer is contingent on passing a basic math and
reading test.] Applicants meeting Exam Part 1 will be invited to test following the interview process.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require
walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.

Weather elements: Will require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
