This is a part-time position working from 2:30 PM - 11 PM (48 hours a pay period). This includes every other weekend and every other holiday.

Scope:

• Responsible for the preparation, administration, and documentation of oral, suppository, eye drops, inhalant, or topical medications. The TMA is not allowed to administer Intramuscular or subcutaneous injections and may not take or record verbal or telephone orders from a physician. • Work closely with the Nursing Assistants. Has contact with members of resident’s family. Mentor new Trained Medication Assistants.

Key Responsibilities:

• Compare the medications with the EMR for proper usage. Prepare and administer oral and topical medications according to facility policy and procedures. Properly identify residents prior to medication administration. Document administration of oral and topical medications. May prepare and administer PRN medications according to charge nurse recommendations with the exception of IM or SQ medications. Prepare, administer, and record use of controlled substances. Administer nebulizer treatments, oxygen therapy and glucose monitoring. All PRN medications must be authorized by the charge nurse prior to administration. All Schedule II medications must be checked by a licensed nurse before administration. • Aware of medication administered observing for correct dosage and side effects. Maintain control of medication keys for all medications and controlled substances. Involvement in on-going education programs for medication administration and maintain knowledge and understanding of current practices regarding drug therapy • Demonstrate knowledge of limitations of the geriatric population with emphasis on loss of senses, physical, and emotional losses. Communicate with the residents with a genuine concern for their needs. Follow through on assignments delegated and document observations as noted in the nursing records. • Participate and assist with resident evacuation procedures in case of fire, disaster or other occurrences requiring the resident be moved. Serve as a mentor and provide orientation to new and/or current employees as directed. Assist in special projects as needed by supervisor. Practice infection control procedures. Meet attendance expectations. • Must participate in creating and maintaining a team approach to a culture in which the resident comes first. Is responsible for creating a home like environment for each person we serve. When coming into contact with a resident that has a need, addressing it and following through until the need is met. Will receive on the job training from other departments to gain the tools necessary to serve our customers. • The duties and responsibilities listed above are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

Education and Experience Required:

• Must have written documentation of a completed nursing assistant training program approved by the Minnesota Department of Health; and have completed a standardized medication administration program for unlicensed personnel in nursing homes which is offered through a Minnesota post-secondary educational institution that includes: a minimum, instruction on the following: o The complete procedure of checking the resident’s medication record. o Preparation of the medication for administration. o Administration of the medication to the resident. o Assist residents with self-administration necessary. o Documentation after administration, of the date, time, dosage, and method of administration of all medications, or the reason for not administering the medication as ordered, and the signature of the nurse or authorized person who administered and observed the same: o The type of information regarding medication reportable to a nurse. • Able to physically perform the duties required by the position. • Required to have the ability to read, write and speak English well enough to communicate with staff, residents and visitors.
