JOB SUMMARY
The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for heredity disorders; supports patient and families dealing with emotional and psychological problems related to disorder. Gathers patient information such as historical records and family health conditions for medical assessment. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Educates patients and health professionals about genetic disorders; ensures appropriate patient referral and care. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions. Ability to operate in clinic and laboratory settings and collaborate between the two. In laboratory settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to reports, reviews family histories to assess particular issues, and interacts with colleagues to coordinate with lab techs and directors on reporting of results. In clinic settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to patients, reviews family histories to assess for genetic risks, and collaborates with physicians and nurses on reporting of patients.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Educates patients and colleagues on the possibility of developing or transmitting inherited diseases. Educates patients, families, and colleagues on aresa of genetic knowledge pertaining to their specific health concerns. Determine or coordinate treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data. Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients of physicians. Interview patients or review medical records to obtain comprehensive patient or family medical histories, and document findings. Assess patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes. Operates genetic diagnostic tools and technologies. Explains possible course of action for patients with genetic and/or pyshcological conditions. Creates secure access to laboratory results and their interpretations in a patient-focused manner. Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and maintain laboratory equpiment. Avoids technical jargon when inappropriate. Demonstrates experience participating in productive collaborative processes.
DEPARTMENT DETAILS
We are looking for a genetic counselor who loves working with kids. This position will be an integrated position with our specialty providers in Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinics. Our genetic counselors work alongside pediatric neurology, cardiology, medical genetics, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, nephrology, and developmental pediatrics. In addition, they provide consults for the NICU, PICU, and pediatric hospital patients.
The pediatric genetic counseling team is involved in multi-disciplinary clinics such as Down Syndrome clinic, Cleft Lip and Palate clinic, Neuromuscular clinic, and may have the opportunity to assist in the development of new clinics.
QUALIFICATIONS
Board certification through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) is required upon hire. If candidates are new graduates, documentation of graduation from an accredited program must be provided upon hire; candidates are then given 4 years from graduating to sit for respective certification. Master of Science from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required. Fulfills expectations for Genetic Counselor as outlined by the ABGC.
