Job Summary
The Coding Specialist performs a variety of duties related to maintenance and application of medical coding including, but not limited to: implements and reviews coding, coordinates the code update process, provides information on new or specialized codes that are not priced and responds to internal and external inquiries regarding correct coding. This position educates internal and external customers on appropriate billing and coding practices and analyzes data related to billing and coding for reimbursement related policies.

Required: Associate's
Preferred: Bachelor's
Field(s) of Study: Healthcare, Healthcare Administration, Nursing or related field
Experience Requirements
Required: Minimum of 2 Years
Preferred: Minimum of 3 Years
Experience Details: Minimum of 2 years of coding experience in a hospital, multi-specialty clinic or a fully integrated health system is required; coding-payment work experience in an insurance environment is preferred.
Certification, Licensures & Registration Requirements
Title: Coding certification, including CPC, CPC-H, RHIT, CCSP or related is required.
State or Agency: American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
Equivalent combination of education, experience or training determined to be acceptable by Human Resources may be substituted, unless regulated by contract or program standards

This position educates internal and external customers on appropriate billing and coding practices and analyzes data related to billing and coding for reimbursement related policies.
Essential Functions
- Coordinates and oversees efforts related to the additions, deletions and revisions to the various code sets used in the claim processing system.
- Develops code update programming requirements, reviews required specifications for affiliate(s), and serves as the contact for the plan. Audits its work to ensure that the final product reflects and will do what it is set up to do.
- Provides support to internal and external customers on issues regarding the appropriate use of the code sets used by the company. Reviews and researches claims, identifies system errors, and problems and develops plans to correct and update the system.
- Collaborates with other areas of the company that have coding related questions or issues. Assists departments with the resolution of questions related to how codes may be impacting other areas of the organization.
- Participates in meetings/conversations with providers that deal with specific coding/billing questions or concerns that need to be addressed with the provider.
- Monitors selected data in both the institutional and the professional claims payment systems to identify inconsistencies or incorrect billing practices and works with impacted areas to correct the issues found.
- Provides education to internal departments and external customers on areas identified by various departments’ input and interactions with providers.
- Prepares Health Care News articles, participates in webinars, conference calls and other educational forums with providers and presents information to outside professional groups as requested.
- Provides support to reimbursement staff and prepares spreadsheets they can reference regarding pricing for new or revised codes.
- Keeps current with changes to coding structures and guidelines typically obtained by attending national coding conferences, national American Medical Associate (AMA) conferences and other local seminars.
