JOB SUMMARY

Plans, develops, and provides diet interventions, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition care and preventive counseling to individuals and groups in all areas of primary and specialty patient care, acute care, skilled nursing, out-patient, and/or community settings. Evaluates treatments or procedures for effectiveness using an evidence-based approach. Works on nutrition care protocols for the assigned area and acts as leader for the health care team in the implementation of the nutrition therapies. Identifies nutritional intervention methods within own specialty. Educates on diet according to disease state, medical condition and health risk. Incorporates new trends and techniques as necessary to design care plan and update standards of care policy manuals and educational material. Assists in tailoring clinical education and associated materials for use with clients/patients, families and caregivers. Performs quality control and maintains a high standard in relation to infection control mechanisms for safety. Optimizes nutritional status by providing medical nutrition therapy to clients/patients with nutrition risk. This includes determination of nutritional status through nutritional assessment, individualized care plans, provider order recommendations and implementation of nutrition therapy (including verbal orders, diet modification, nutrition support, oral nutrition supplements), education and counseling for disease and nutrition risk management, and evaluation of outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions. Additionally includes: optimization of self-management education and skills in the care of clients/patients with chronic conditions. Provides nutrition therapy and monitors nutritional care of clients/patients of all ages including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Ability to recognize, evaluates, and provide for nutritional needs based on cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs. This includes the responsibility to develop, coordinate and conduct educational activities for individuals with illnesses/diseases associated with nutrition, and to their families. Provides leadership, guidance and acts as a resource through consultation with Sanford associates and community agencies. Coordinate, plan, and participate in community activities regarding medical nutrition therapy according to quality standards. Aware and conscious of individual's insurance coverage and reimbursement circumstances, and participates in clinical performance improvement activities, including research that tests new treatments or procedures for clinical evidence of outcomes.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborates with an extended professional network of contacts to help clients effectively identify, plan for and accomplish objectives. Completes tasks and inspires confidence in leaders by demonstrating honesty and integrity. Demonstrates knowledge of development and delivery of patient education for diverse audiences. Documents the critical elements within a patient chart to help others. Ensures staff development is in line with strategic organizational and departmental objectives. Establishes and maintains productive working relationships within and outside of own area. Establishes requirements for large changes in the overall mission, roles, responsibilities and processes necessary to make business improvements. Formulates comprehensive nutritional therapeutic plans for optimizing client results. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary. Makes use of journals, associations, and conferences in own professional specialty. Seeks opportunities to serve as a mentor. Trains others on the relevance of nutritional therapy as a holistic discipline for maintaining a desirable state of health. Utilizes multiple nutritional treatments to meet complex client requirements and conditions.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

This dietitian will manage patients with inborn errors of metabolism as well as pediatric patients. Experience with Inborn Errors of Metabolism preferred. At least 3 years as a clinical dietitian. Preference of advanced certification (ie: Certified Specialist in Pediatrics, Certified Nutrition Support Clinician, etc).

QUALIFICATIONS

Currently holds Registered Dietitian (RD) license within the applicable state(s). Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) required. Possess one of the following: advanced certification from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), an advanced certification from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), certification from the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE). Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers required or within the first 60 days of hire. Bachelors degree in dietetics or food and nutrition through an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited program. Clinical nutrition experience through an approved coordinated undergraduate program or successful completion of postgraduate internship required. Three years experience as a clinical dietitian required. Potential consideration granted to individuals with a Masters degree if obtained after a minimum of three years working as a Dietitian with a Bachelor of Science degree, and/or have a Masters Degree benefiting area of practice prior to January 1, 2014, as an alternative to an advanced certification.
