The aircraft parachute systems engineer is responsible for creating innovative, lightweight, safe, and reliable aircraft designs that provide the greatest value for our customers. This job is responsible for the detail design, analysis, design substantiation, and coordination of product implementation of assigned aircraft mechanical systems, particularly the full airframe parachute system, referred to as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, or CAPS. To perform this function, the aircraft systems engineer performs the following functions:

  • Synthesize and document design and interface requirements based on FAA, corporate, customer, and technical integrity needs
  • Develop conceptual through finished detailed aircraft designs that provide the best compromise of all requirements
  • Create project planning products such as scope of work, identification of key tests and analyses, resource requirements, and MS project schedules
  • Conduct periodic design reviews (conceptual, preliminary, critical, and production readiness)
  • Coordinate the design activity with all other areas with other engineering disciplines as well as other areas of the company
  • Participate in flight readiness reviews and provide decision on go-for-flight disposition for assigned systems
  • Initiate and coordinate ground and flight test programs to aid in the development of these systems
  • Determine, perform, and document relevant analyses to aid in the development and substantiation of these systems (including performance, FHA's, FMEA's, and SSA's)
  • Determine appropriate environmental categories and conditions under RTCA DO-160 for qualification of system equipment
  • Supplement Creo efforts when needed or expedient by creating 3-D models, drawings (appropriately defined, dimensioned and toleranced to ensure design intent), and other Engineering Change documentation
  • Maintain proficiency in tools necessary to support analysis and design (Creo, MS project, JIRA, Windchill, and system specific software for modeling mechanical, thermal, or fluid dynamics performance)
  • Expertise in scientific and engineering principles governing assigned systems, ability to develop and validate system simulations and models
  • Determine supplier requirements for analysis, design, reporting, and product performance
  • Coordinate supplier technical efforts and ensure high level of integration
  • Write conformity test plans and reports (PSCP, test, design, and reconciliation) containing well thought out substantiation for all applicable FAA requirements
  • Thoroughly understand all applicable Cirrus engineering specifications, CDEP's, Cirrus engineering forms (ECO, ECN, EWO, NCR), Cirrus Drawing Requirements manual, Cirrus configuration control and drawing release procedures, and FAA regulations and guidance material
  • Thoroughly understand all FAA part 23 regulations as well as industry standards and guidance (e.g. ASTM, SAE, RTCA) applicable to assigned systems.
  • Determine proposed conformity requirements for DER review using Cirrus systems such as JIRA that properly define areas to be conformed so as to ensure that the test results substantiate the new design features
  • Provide drafting and design intent check for drawings and related engineering
  • Maintain system expert technical knowledge on all assigned systems to solve project, production, and field issues
  • Establish and maintain technical standards for the design of aircraft systems
  • Maintain awareness of new technology and methods that may be appropriate for new CDC projects


Experience in the following is desired:
  • 3+ years experience in an aircraft systems engineering role
  • FAR Part 23 certification in relation to aircraft systems
  • Parachute and textile design and testing
  • Parachute ejection, extraction, and harness system design
  • Airframe recovery system design and testing
  • CAD experience/CREO preferred
