Position Description:
Carry out the functions of dairy research facility in a professional and profitable manner. Provide the department with a quality milk at productive levels to insure margin of profit. Aid and assist herdsman in all tasks, including but not limited to: herd health, reproduction, genetics, nutrition, animal stewardship, employee training, personnel management, facility improvement, and general maintenance. Fulfill the role of herdsman in his/her absence. Supervise student laborers. Assist herdsman in creating standard operating procedures. Work with the herdsman and part-time employees to fulfill day-to-day tasks essential to the success of the NDSU Dairy Research and Teaching Center, including, but not limited to, milking cows, mixing and delivering feed, visual assessment of animal health, breeding of cows, facility maintenance, and assuring a clean environment for animals and employees. Aid and assist herdsman and researchers on assigned research involving dairy animals at NDSU . This includes helping with sample collection, data entry, and administering treatments as prescribed by experimental protocols. Develop knowledge of computer programs used at the DRC , including DHIA programs, Holstein Association software, ration balancing programs, and BouMatic Milking and Management System. Must have demonstrated ability to use these programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A.S. degree or high school diploma/ GED and three years related experience.
- Minimum of two years of experience in a livestock-related field.
- Demonstrated competence to safely and proficiently operate farm equipment to include, but not be limited to, trucks, tractors, skid steer loaders, manure handling equipment, and various other attachments such as feed wagons, trailers, and miscellaneous equipment.
- Evidence of supervisory skills, which may include training of student employees.
- Proficiency in computer operation and maintenance to include software applications such as Microsoft Office and various dairy-related record-keeping programs.
- Ability and willingness to assist with the organization, implementation, and collection of research data, as well as follow unit protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Proficient communications skills and exceptional willingness to collaborate with staff, faculty, and management on tasks related to the mission of the department.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and a cooperative attitude conducive to working in a team environment.
- Ability to correctly accomplish vital tasks while working alone.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include working some weekends and holidays.
- Demonstrated ability to perform various duties that require heavy lifting (50+ lbs).
- Basic understanding of machinery maintenance to include checking oil, grease fittings, and inflate tires.

Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S. degree in dairy science, animal sciences, or similar agriculturally related field.
- A.I. certification and demonstrated skills required to perform tasks such as heat detection, correctly servicing cows, and correctly applying timed A.I. protocols.
- Competence in operating applicable dairy management software, data entry, and report generation for: DHIA (PC Dart), animal registration (Holstein USA Redbook), milking equipment programming and operation (BouMatic), ration balancing software (various), and other technology applications germane to record maintenance and site operations.

Heavy lifting (50+ lbs), working with large animals, and operating machinery.
