Job Details

Position Description:
Assist with the design, implementation, and analysis of experiments conducted in association with Fusarium head blight ( FHB ) breeding efforts by the hard spring wheat breeding program. Areas of research include incorporation of FHB resistance, and improvement of grain yield and quality of hard spring wheat. Assist in preparation of seed for sowing early generation material and yield trials as well as entries in the Fusarium head blight ( FHB ) and rust nurseries located in the field, prepare associated field books, and take notes on FHB infection in field nurseries at three locations in ND. Manage the mist-irrigated FHB nursery located at Prosper near Fargo, including maintenance of irrigation pipe to supply mist-irrigation, and making sure the mist-irrigation system is functioning properly throughout the disease inoculation and incubation period. Manage greenhouse hybridization and F1 growout during three annual greenhouse cycles.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Earned B.S. degree or the equivalent in Plant Sciences, Agronomy, Crop & Weed Sciences. Individuals without a BS degree must have 5 years of directly related experience
• Working experience in small plot research
• Working experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing field plot equipment
• Working computer experience in the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, database programs and other computer applications and technology
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work well with others and effective supervisory skills
• Valid U.S. driver's license
• ND Certified Pesticide Applicators License or ability to be certified
• Must be capable of lifting 50+ pounds

Preferred Qualifications:
• Working experience with the execution of field, greenhouse and laboratory
trials, preferably in the context of a plant breeding program
• Prior supervisory experience
• Commercial drivers license

Physical Demands:
• Must be capable of lifting 50+ pounds
• Work with farm equipment
• Work outside under challenging weather conditions
• Work longer hours seasonally, including weekends when needed for planting and harvest
• Ability to travel to different sites in North Dakota, Arizona, and Puerto Rico
