Hiring Department Department of Theatre Arts

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  $35,000+/Annual, Full-time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule:  9-month position; Monday-Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Work schedule will require some non-standard hours related to performance and production duties.

The Technical Director is an integral part of the Dept. of Theatre Arts and the production program. The TD is responsible for the construction of all scenic elements for department productions in accordance with professional standards for theatre and the accrediting agency, NAST. Students assist in the construction of sets through practicum and work study. The TD supervises students in THEA 201 & 481 practicum courses, student lab hours for THEA 110 Intro to Theatre, THEA 270 Stagecraft, and work study students. The supervision includes managing student hours and instructing students in use of all shop tools and best practices. The TD creates a production calendar for the season to ensure coordination of all elements in the production process from production meetings, rehearsals and build schedules. The TD in coordination with the Chair and Assoc. Chair set the production budgets for the year. The TD will manage the Scene Shop budget. The TD will oversee the physical condition of Burtness Theatre, dept. areas of Merrifield, and Montgomery Hall and works with Facilities to maintain the theatre, scene and costume shops, and all support areas. The TD supervises booking of non-department events in Burtness. The TD in the Dept. of Theatre Arts is also the sound designer and technician for video/projections used in any performance. As sound designer the TD coordinates all microphones and other sound resources for all department productions based on the needs of the show.

The Department of Theatre Arts hosts most productions in Burtness Theatre, where live theatre is offered to the campus and surrounding community.  Two stages are used: a 347-seat house with a  stage, and a black-box theatre with 120+ seats.  See the Position Description for more information.
 
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

Technical Director, Scene Shop Supervisor, & University Technical Resource

  • Working with UND Safety Office, develop and monitor safety, and security procedures.
  • Together with Scenic Designer, Costume Designer, and Chair, establish and monitor annual production budget
  • Maintain scenic and prop inventory.
  • Establish and monitor operational procedures.
  • With Production Staff, determine technical rehearsal schedule for each production.
  • Draft shop drawings.
  • Estimate time and material costs for each project.
  • Establish and monitor construction schedules.
  • Coordinate various steps in building process.
  • Supervise the building process and coordinate labor among shop assistants and crews.
  • Set and monitor quality standards.
  • Establish and monitor specific construction techniques.
  • Supervise student technical work in Lab Theatre.
  • Manage hours submitted by student employees.
  • Schedule and supervise non-departmental events.
  • Provide information for projects involving technical theatre for University of North Dakota and outside groups.


Supervise student heads/assistants of scene shop, sound/light, props and advise stage managers

  • Hold regularly scheduled meetings with area heads/assistants of departments. 
  • Develop schedule and procedures with heads/assistants to ensure duties are performed in timely manner and that inventories are being maintained. 
  • Ensure props lists for shows are being built, purchased, or otherwise acquired and that storage areas are maintained. 
  • Schedule weekly meetings with Stage Managers to go over production processes and schedules to confirm that duties are being performed, that production needs are being met, and that stage managers understand duties and processes.


Production Sound Design & Video Engineering

  • Develop and execute sound design in collaboration with director and according to rehearsal schedule. 
  • Oversee engineering for production video designs created for individual productions.
  • Train and supervise Sound and Video Operators. 
  • Maintain Sound and Video equipment. 
  • Maintain Sound and Video libraries.


Required Competencies:

  • Expertise in building theatrical scenic elements
  • Expertise in all scene shop and lighting equipment
  • Expertise in sound design equipment and microphone systems
  • Expertise in computer projection/video equipment
  • Expertise in computers and software
  • Expertise in organization and interpersonal communication

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience working with different types of materials including metals, wood, plastics/foams, etc.
  • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) and design software
  • Experience with Sound and Video systems for theatre
  • Training in first aid and safety procedures
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFA in Theatre Design/Tech or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience with lighting equipment and systems
  • Experience with welding
  • Experience with scenic painting
  • Experience supervising and training students in scene shop equipment, tools and best practices
  • Supervisory experience with managing work study hourly records
