JOB SUMMARY

MA - The Medication
Assistant (MA) serves as caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care
and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge
nurse.
Knowledge of and
delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs
of the resident per plan of care. Provide assistance with basic health care
needs including daily living activities that may include, but are not limited
to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording
vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to
assigned resident. May assist the resident in transferring, repositioning, and
walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and
provides range of motion and passive exercises. Completes tasks related to food
preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the
resident. They may assist residents with meals and snacks; provide water and
supplements as appropriate.
If needed, may aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures.
Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within
their scope of practice as defined by state regulations. Documents the outcomes
related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and
dietary. Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up and care related
concerns/responses to the charge nurse. Collects non-invasive body fluid
specimens and gathers vital signs. Provides housekeeping and laundry services
to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational. Provides
assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and
encourages residents to participate.

NA - The Nursing
Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work
period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and
daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge
nurse. Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living
activities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting,
grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and
providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident.
Depending upon location, they may assist the resident in transferring,
repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques
and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises.
Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a
positive dining experience for the resident. Assists residents with meals and
snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate. Depending upon location
the NA may aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or
collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs. Depending
upon location the NA may administer prescribed medications as delegated by a
licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state
regulations. NA documents the outcomes related to resident care, medication
administration, behavior, activity, and dietary. NA must communicate changing
condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the
charge nurse. Depending upon location, NA may provide housekeeping and laundry
services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
Provides assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs
and encourages residents to participate. The NA has knowledge of and delivers
age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the
resident as per care/service plan. Depending upon the location, may need to be
knowledgeable of providing care to tenants with dementia. The NA is considered
a member of the nursing team and is expected to know, and will be held
accountable for, following infection prevention and control policies and
Personal Protective Equipment use. The nursing department provides care 24
hours/day; any of those hours may be an expectation of employment specific to
the needs of the department, possibly with varying shifts. These needs change
dependent upon staffing availability and resident census. Will be required to
work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Specific shift assignments will
be made based on nursing area and by location. Committee meeting attendance may
be expected at times. When students are providing resident care, treatment,
and/or services as part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to
provide direction to the students.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

MA - Evaluates patient's progress and communicates
with multidisciplinary team members. Documents the critical elements within a
patient chart to help others. Collects medical specimens with strict adherence
to established procedures and test requisitions. Assists with daily living of
numerous patients with a wide variety of health conditions. Administer
medications prescribed by providers. Adheres to legal regulations and
organizational policies when discussing patient health information. Responsible
for promoting a safe environment for patients, families, staff, residents, and
visitors and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary heath care
team to provide the best outcome for patients. Performs routine cleaning and
disinfecting tasks in certain areas of a healthcare organization. Operates and
maintains medical equipment based on specific policies. Monitors patient
progress and identifies issues and concerns regarding progress. Maintains a
high standard in relation to infection control mechanisms for patient safety.

NA - Responsible for promoting a safe environment
for patients, families, staff, residents, and visitors and working collaboratively
with the multi-disciplinary heath care team to provide the best outcome for
patients. Performs routine cleaning and disinfecting tasks in certain areas of
a healthcare organization. Operates and maintains medical equipment based on
specific policies. Evaluates patients progress and communicates with
multidisciplinary team members. Ensures that all equipment or related supplies
are in proper working order prior to use. Documents the critical elements
within a patient chart to help others. Collects medical specimens with strict
adherence to established procedures and test requisitions. Assists with daily
living of numerous patients with a wide variety of health conditions. Adheres
to legal regulations and organizational policies when discussing patient health
information.

QUALIFICATIONS

MA -

High school graduate or general equivalency
diploma (GED) required.
Minimum age of 18 preferred.
Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience preferred.
Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and
maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year. A minimum of
12 hours continuing education are required annually based on state
requirements. Maintains all department specific required certifications. When
applicable, may need a valid Driver's License and auto insurance.
North Dakota and Iowa: Require Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
with the State Board of Nursing. CNA certification must be maintained with the
State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of a state-approved Certified
Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained.

NA -

living preferred.

license and auto insurance.
If
working in South Dakota, must have successfully completed of a state-approved
Trained Medication Aide course. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training and
certification required and provided by facility. CNA certification must be
maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
If
working in North Dakota (ND), must be registered as a Unlicensed Assistive
Person (UAP) with the State Board of Nursing, within four months of date into
the position.
If
working in Minnesota, CNA certification preferred and registered with the
Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Or, one must become a state certified CNA
within four months of date into the position by being enrolled in a training
program or in the process of obtaining certification through Endorsement. CNA
training and certification required and provided by facility. If passing
medications, must successfully complete facility provided medication administration
course.
