POSITION DESCRIPTION: The City of Fargo Water Treatment Facility is currently seeking two seasonal employees to work 40 hours per week until the end of August.

Under general supervision, this position assists plant maintenance staff with a variety of duties both inside and out.  Duties may include janitorial work, cleaning of buildings and grounds, landscape care, and occasional heavy lifting of 100 lb.     
 
Scope of Responsibility:
 
This position is responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her work, as well as any equipment they may use.
  PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Maintain facility grounds
    1. Operate both riding and push mowers, as well as weed trimmers to maintain turf
      1. Inspect equipment on a daily basis prior to operation to ensure proper fuel levels, tire pressure, and overall condition are conducive to safe operation; reports broken parts and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor as needed.
    2. Drive light truck & trailer loaded with equipment to remote sites
    3. Pick up trash/debris from water/wastewater properties
    4. Pull/spray weeds
    5. Maintain trees & shrubbery
      1. Light pruning
      2. Replace mulch
      3. Install pavers
      4. Water
    6.     Help maintenance staff maintain and repair automated sprinkler system
  2. Maintain facility buildings
    1. Clean restrooms – toilets, sinks, shower areas, etc.
    2. Mop restrooms, hallways, and other areas as needed
    3. Dust, vacuum, and clean as needed
       
  3. Assist plant staff in light maintenance
    1. Assist changing light bulbs
    2. Assist changing filters in HVAC system
    3. Assist in general equipment maintenance
      1. Sanding, scraping, painting
         
  4. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work
      1. Wears proper clothing – long pants, protective footwear, shirt, etc.
        1. Shorts/open toed shoes/tank tops are not acceptable
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, make efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable, and notify the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
       
  5. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D.).  A valid driver's license is required.  
 
Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • General knowledge of turf maintenance
  • General knowledge of mechanical equipment maintenance activities
  • Basic knowledge of herbicides and proper handling of hazardous materials
  • Skill in performing minor maintenance functions
  • Skill in the proper operation of turf care equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have good customer service skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Most work is performed outdoors, weather permitting. Work is generally very heavy and involves operating riding and push mowers.  Work is performed in all weather conditions.  Incumbent is required to take appropriate safety precautions.  Incumbent may have exposure to injury, trauma, angry individuals, heavy falling objects, some chemicals, loud noise, insects, fumes, dust, dirt, and adverse road and weather conditions. Work is often in or near streets and power lines.  Incumbent spends a part of each day in a City truck.  If unable to work outside, inside maintenance will be performed. 
 
Incumbents must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, operate equipment (mowers/trimmers) for extended periods, and occasionally lift, push, or pull, up to 100 pounds.  Frequently lift, push or pull, up to 50 pounds, and regularly move objects up to 20 pounds.  Strong attention to detail is required.
 
Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.
 
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
