Sports Reporter

The West Central Tribune, a multimedia company based in a growing regional center in west central Minnesota, is looking for an innovative and talented sports reporter to join our team. Our sports coverage includes local prep athletics along with Ridgewater College athletics, Northwoods League baseball and NA3HL hockey. The Willmar lakes area is rich in recreation and outdoor opportunities. The successful candidate will be able to tell great stories in print, digital and video formats. This reporter will cultivate sources, write quality content and produce photos and video content. The successful candidate will promote our brand and content and engage readers via social media. We are a multimedia content company covering west central Minnesota and a member of Forum Communications Co.

Responsibilities:

• Using interview, observation and research to gather and accurately relay engaging stories promptly.
• Working independently and with editors to identify and produce watchdog journalism and storytelling opportunities.
• Writing according to editorial style and format standards, both for print newspaper and digital platforms.
• Building a rapport with sources in the community and on a beat to develop people-driven stories.
• Collaborating with the newsroom design team to ensure stories are presented in the best way possible.
• Will be attuned to local, regional and state issues.
• Covering assignments in prep athletics, college athletics, Northwoods League baseball and NA3HL junior hockey.
• Copy edit when necessary.
• Writing and compiling prep all-area football, volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball and softball.
• Rotate Sunday shifts with sports editor.
• Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/work experience in mass communications or journalism.
• Ability to handle a fast-paced environment and flexible hours while meeting deadlines.
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Photography and video experience preferred.
• Social media platform experience a plus.
• Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
• Must have a valid driver's license with a driving record that is insurable by the company.
