Position Description:
The molecular microbiologist is primarily responsible for independently performing, interpreting and troubleshooting PCR assays for diseases of regulatory and diagnostic significance to the animal health industry. PCR methodology utilized will include extraction of nucleic acids from filter and magnetic bead-based systems and end point and real-time PCR ; the latter both multiplex probe and fluorescent dye based. The secondary duty of this position is assisting and performing critical testing functions in other laboratory sections during normal staff leave or high-volume submission times. This responsibility will entail assisting in sample accessioning and cross disciplinary training to gain competency in other test methods used in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Minor responsibilities of this position will include participation in the diagnostic laboratory's quality assurance/quality control system, data entry, and participation in proficiency checks for maintenance of national certification. This position will require performance of the following tasks in a detail oriented manner: Processing appropriate diagnostic samples for the extraction of RNA and DNA from a variety of clinical samples and pathogen types; Performing and interpreting both end point (gel based) and real-time PCR assays; Passing proficiency tests to maintain laboratory certifications; Sample labeling, receiving and data entry into LIMS system; Maintenance of detailed laboratory records; Maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory; Ordering and maintenance of required reagents and instruments; Working in BSL -2 and BSL -3 laboratory environments with adherence to biosafety rules and regulations; Cross training and performing testing in other laboratory sections as required. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Certified (or eligible to be certified) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology ( ASCP ) with 1 year of experience working in a diagnostic laboratory setting, or BS with 2 or more years of experience working in a diagnostic laboratory setting
  • Experience with a Quality Management System
  • Knowledge of PCR theory and methodology
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 or more years of general laboratory experience, including 1 year of experience in PCR
  • 1 or more years of full-time experience performing PCR in a diagnostic laboratory setting
  • Experience in other diagnostic laboratory testing methods
