Job you will do

Typical Day in the Life

Candidates will be exposed to a variety of state and local tax issues ranging from tax planning, restructuring, due diligence, audit defense, audit management, taxability research, general compliance, writing and correspondence. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with sales/use and state income/franchise tax engagements including day-to-day consulting, development of ideas, strategies and opportunities, and implementation of these ideas. This individual will be leveraged work from other SALT personnel.

A typical day as a State and Local Tax Manager in Salt Lake City, Phoenix or Denver might include the following:
  • Research of state tax issues including nexus determinations, taxability analyses and quantification of potential liabilities.
  • Address state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships and LLCs.
  • Prepare SALT memos on a variety of topics including but not limited to: nexus and taxability for sales/use and income/franchise tax, sales/use tax processes, apportionment, business strategies, property tax and escheats.
  • Multi-state income tax planning, compliance issues and income tax accounting.
  • State tax controversies, restructuring, due diligence, notice responses and audit defense including audit protests.
  • Sales tax return review and guidance, income/franchise tax return review and guidance, voluntary disclosure projects, credits and incentives, payroll taxes and recovery studies.
  • Client communications, project scoping, budgeting, staffing and billing.
  • Attend professional development and training seminars on a regular basis.

 

Who You Are
  • You enjoy keeping up-to-date on the ever-changing tax industry's regulations and policies.
  • You possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • You possess comprehensive technical skills as it relates to multi-state taxation and tax research, experience with unitary filings, apportionment methodologies, tax base rules, sales and use tax issues.
  • You have experience with due diligence, voluntary disclosure negotiations, audit defense, credits and incentives, and MS Excel modeling.
  • You are highly skilled at identifying and addressing client needs; building, maintaining and utilizing networks of client relationships and community involvement; communicating value propositions; managing resource requirements; managing project workflow, budgets, billing and collections; and preparing and/or coordinating complex written and verbal materials.
  • Experience with property tax and escheats a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with flowthrough entities a plus, but not required.
  • In additional to all of this, you possess a minimum 2 years of experience as a team leader: supervising teams to create an atmosphere of trust; seeking diverse views to encourage improvement and innovation; and coaching staff, including providing timely and meaningful written and verbal feedback. You also have a CPA designation or a JD (required.) MT, MBA, CMI and/or LLM preferred, but not required.

Must be authorized to work in the United States permanently without the requirement of sponsorship at any point in the future.
