Hiring Department:  The Office of Student Success

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification: $51,000/per year, Full Time, Benefited, Exempt
Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave.  Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans.
Work Schedule:  Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm; some evening and Saturdays for class instruction and recruitment/retention efforts; and as required to complete duties

Core advisors shape the culture of advising at UND. Core advisors provide advising for transfer students, students in transition between colleges, and for majors within colleges as needed. They provide professional development and training for advisors across campus. Core advisors are responsible for ensuring that recruitment and retention goals of colleges and the university are being met. They are also responsible for evaluation and assessment of advising.

  • Advise students in programs as needed in the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines (CNPD)
  • All CNPD duties will include daily supervision of up to 20 hours per week in the College with feedback on evaluation from the Dean and/or Associate Dean
  • Help students with walk-in advising questions/concerns
  • Use starfish and degree map/planner as the advising tools from orientation to graduation
  • Support faculty advisor/mentor use of Starfish in CNPD
  • Keep up to date on curriculum changes across campus
  • Effectively communicate campus policies, resources, and services to students
  • Provide initial advisement for transfer students and prospective transfer students
  • Serve as College Transfer Advisor for CNPD
  • Complete and support change of major requests
  • Work with two-year institutions to improve transfer experience
  • Help maintain and update finish in four plans on an annual basis
  • Train, support, and lead peer mentors to support retention efforts
  • Participate in outbound calls and other college retention efforts
  • Staff student orientation and commencement
  • Understand and participate in College and University recruitment/retention goals through advising efforts
  • Engage in all recruitment events and activities
  • Work closely with admissions to respond to prospective student visits and other initiatives
  • Instruct UNIV 101 (2 credits): Participate in course assessment and common course content development when requested (6.67%)
  • Provide professional development training for undergraduate advisors as needed
  • Help develop advising metrics
  • Participate in professional development
  • Other duties as assigned (e.g., staff senate, committees, special projects)


Required Competencies:

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to consider advising from OneUND perspective
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Effective use or change of processes/delegation of workload

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with models of advising known to improve retention: proactive, developmental, or advising as teaching
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check

  • Master’s degree
