Hiring Department:  The Office of Academic Affairs

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification: $44,000/per year, Full Time, Benefited, Exempt
Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave.  Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans.
Work Schedule:  Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm; some Saturdays for recruitment/retention efforts; and as required to complete duties

College of Engineering & Mines Academic Advisors shape the culture of advising in the College. CEM Academic advisors provide advising for transfer students, online students, and for majors within the college as needed. Academic advisors are responsible for helping students navigate resources and processes across campus. They are also responsible for evaluation and assessment of advising.

  • Provide academic, advanced degree program, and career advising for current on campus and online undergraduate programs assigned to including knowledge of all degree requirements
  • Meet with prospective and transfer students interested in the university and programs assigned to
  • Write letters of recommendation for students and serve as a reference for students
  • Advise incoming students during the summer orientation program
  • Understand needs of various student populations (e.g., online, military-affiliated, athletes, international, and otherwise diverse student backgrounds)
  • Understanding and appropriate use of various advising models
  • Participation in assessment of advising
  • Understand institutional specific policies and procedures such as term dates and deadline, ES petition, Ad Pro petition, withdraw processes, graduation application, changes of major, collaborative course processes, readmission and reinstatement processes, academic grievance processes, etc.
  • Understand program/college/University goals for retention and graduation
  • Use of Campus Connection, College Scheduler, and Degree Map
  • Use of Starfish
  • Understand student use of Blackboard and Handshake
  • Basics of financial aid
  • Career exploration tools (e.g., FOCUS 2, career services events, pairings of degree options, graduate or professional degree options)
  • Campus resources and services
  • Participation in graduation ceremonies
  • Participation in recruitment fairs, prospective student and guest visits, welcome weekend/meetings, etc.
  • On campus workshops for professional development
  • Yearly participation in regional/national advising events


Required Competencies:
 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills

 Minimum Requirements:
 

  • Bachelor degree
  • Experience advising undergraduate students
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications:
 

  • Experience with programs/majors in the College of Engineering and Mines
  • Experience with use of advising tools (e.g., campus connection, starfish)
  • Experience working with online/distance students
