JOB SUMMARY

Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability. Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
In a retail/community pharmacy setting, the Pharmacist reviews, interprets and dispenses both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients. The pharmacist takes an active role in responding to prescription issues and advising providers on the selection, dosage, interaction and side effects of medications. Counsels patients on the medication prescription including but not limited to: proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, storage and any other questions posed by the patient. Monitors the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy. Must be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves. Provides oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy series and pharmacy support personnel.
In a medical center or institutional setting, the Pharmacist reviews and interprets provider orders, provides drug information, assists in problem solving, and provides other aspects of pharmaceutical care. Duties may consist of unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating the electronic medical record, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices. The Pharmacist utilizes appropriate age-related patient information to assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients, which may include provision of pharmaceutical care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The Pharmacist follows all established regulations and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy. May be required to act as a shift supervisor under direct or indirect supervision by department managers. Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves. Provides oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy services and pharmacy support personnel.
Pharmacy services at Sanford Health may include involvement in acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation. May include decentralized clinical functions, such as direct patient interaction/interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, customer or patient counseling, collecting accurate medication list. May also include centralized clinical functions, such as checking and dispensing medications and overseeing the clinical functions of the IV room.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Identifies medicinal side effects, drug-drug interactions and food-drug interactions. Communicates with patients and providers about therapeutic responses, side effects and associated time frames to optimize drug therapy and improve therapeutic outcomes. Collaborates with other health care professionals to identify therapeutic treatments and advises providers on safe and effective use of drugs for clinical/therapeutic procedures, including benefits and side effects of alternative treatments. Participates in basic prescription-verification practices. Follows pharmaceutical guidelines, regulations and standards; adheres to safety procedures. Demonstrates experience with compounding, dispensing, and labeling of drugs. Follows organizational guidelines and procedures by participating in the collection, processing, documentation, and reporting of adverse events.

Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo has been an important regional resource for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer since it opened its doors in 1990. Roger Maris Cancer Center focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer, which provides adults and pediatric patients with comprehensive cancer treatment. Research has also been an important component of the care and treatment at Roger Maris.
As an oncology pharmacist in the infusion center pharmacy, you will provide outpatient oncology pharmaceutical care in an interactive, interdisciplinary team environment.
Position Responsibilities:
• Provide prospective medication order review for ambulatory outpatient oncology medication orders. In particular, verify all high-risk medications to ensure the appropriateness of use from clinical, financial, and policy compliance perspectives.
• Review the profiles of all patients that present for chemotherapy or other medication interventions daily. Evaluate patient medication regimens and pertinent lab results, and provide interventions as needed.
• Serve as an educational and drug information resource to medical staff, nursing, as well as patients as requested/needed.
• Serve as additional pharmacist staff support for investigational drug service pharmacist as needed.
Pharmacists must be competent in providing pharmacy interventions for patients that require complex chemotherapies, biologic therapies and investigational medications. In addition, pharmacists must be competent in providing general pharmacy services that include renal dosing services and anticoagulation and pain management interventions. A successful candidate for this role will have experience and/or advanced training in the practice of oncology/hematology. The completion of an ASHP PGY-1 accredited residency or specialized experience is preferred. The completion of a PGY-2 in oncology or Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy is favorable.

QUALIFICATIONS

In a retail/community pharmacy setting: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Must have a thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations.
In a medical center or institutional setting: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Must have a thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations. Hospital experience or residency preferred.
License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
