Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8-4:30. Alternative work hours, if desired, should be agreed upon at the time of joining.

Responsibilities

General and vascular surgical procedures and clinics with general surgery residents are primary duties. Vascular surgeon will perform a wide array of open and minimally invasive vascular and endovascular procedures. The majority of cases are peripheral vascular and endovascular, cartoid endarterectomies, AV (arteriovenous) access. The vascular surgeon is responsible to perform surgery and assist surgical residents with general, vascular, thoracic, endocrine, oncologic surgery, and minimally invasive surgery of the abdomen and chest (laparoscopy and thoracoscopy). The vascular surgeon is responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and and outpatients settings. Other duties include responding to patient telephone calls, informing patients of test/lab results, renewing medication prescriptions, giving telephone or e-mail advice to other providers, and administrative duties, if any.

On-call responsibilities are shared with surgical residents and other staff surgeons.

The incumbent is responsible for entering accurate, complete, timely progress notes for each episode of care in the patient's electronic record. This is accomplished by utilizing the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).

The incumbent is responsible for the proper use, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment used in the assessment and care of patients.

The incumbent adheres to safety, health, and infection control standards, regulations, and work practices, as well as ergonomic standards. He/she reports any unsafe conditions to supervisor and/or appropriate officials.

The incumbent assists in orientation of new staff, and will provide patient and family education, including informed consent.

Demonstrate knowledge and maintains standards in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience: Board certification or possess equivalent training and experience.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
